Any drink that contains caffeine is the go-to answer when an individual is tired. Think about it. When you want to open your eyes, you think of coffee. But, we all know the addictive quality of such drinks. A new answer to this conundrum is terere. A tea-like beverage that is popular in Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina, it is made from the plant Ilex paraguariensis or what is colloquially called Yerba Mate. www.webmd.com says that the mate plant is used for medicine, too. It can cure fatigue, depression, UTI and heart-related diseases.
This article will talk about some of the details that go into preparing the drink. Yerba mate is also used to brew another beverage called chimarrão. Because the tereré and chimarrao are made with similar techniques, people tend to confuse them. Both drinks are found in South America, but it is the temperature difference of the brews that make them unique. Tereré is prepared with cold water. This makes the drink refreshing and cooling to have which makes it widespread in the warmer regions of the continent like Paraguay. Chimarrao on the hand is a hot beverage. Thus, is consumed mainly in Brazil.
What began as a beverage in one part of continent, decades and decades back, has now spread to every corner. The benefits of the Yerba mate plant make the drink extremely popular. Tereré is an infusion drink that is created by blending thick stems and leaves with water. Chimarrao is also made similarly but the leaves used are thinner. Since the herbs used to infuse flavor in tereré are heavier than chimarrao, its taste is stronger and bitterer.
The tereré can be kept in any bottle or flask before consumption. There is no limit to the size or the material of which it is made. From 1 liter flasks to 5-liter bottles everything is usable. When compared, the chimarrao drink needs to be stored in an aluminum flask or coffee thermos. The size has to be around 1lt because it is consumed at a slower pace than tereré. The container or utensil used to drink the yerba mate infusion, tereré, is called guampa. These utensils have a curved body like an ox horn. They can be made of glass, aluminum or even plastic.
Just like with every minute aspect of the two yerba mate infusion drinks, even the tool used to drink chimarrao is different than terere’s. The hot yerba mate drink is consumed in a gourd. It is round in shape and can come in any size big or small. The form of the gourd is such to make handling the beverage easy and placement straightforward else the temperature can lead to mishaps. The tereré is imbibed through a straw called bombilla. The straw is perforated.
The healing and rejuvenating properties of the yerba mate drinks are undeniable. Tereré not only has antioxidants but is also a stimulant. It can keep a body hydrated at high temperatures plus provide the essential minerals that deplete with sweat.
